The Universe You Cannot See | A SleepWise Story About Dark Matter and Dark Energy

Somewhere above every roof tonight, in the same sky the shepherds and astronomers have always watched, most of the universe is quietly missing. Not missing in the sense of hidden behind a cloud, or lost in the glare of a city. Missing in a stranger, deeper sense: unseen, unfelt by any instrument that catches light, and yet gathered in such vast quantities that entire galaxies would fly apart without it. And beyond that missing substance, everything we can see is quietly moving away from us — not because we are being fled, but because space itself, the emptiness between the stars, is very slowly growing. Tonight on SleepWise we drift through the strange, patient story of how humans came to know these two things, and of the great deal we still do not.

We wander back through the long history of the question. To Isaac Newton and the picture of a fixed, waiting cosmos. To Vesto Slipher's 1912 measurements of galaxies flying away, and to Edwin Hubble's confirmation in 1929 that the universe was expanding. We visit Georges Lemaître's primordial atom, Einstein's abandoned cosmological constant, the accidental discovery of the cosmic microwave background by Penzias and Wilson in 1965, and Fritz Zwicky's 1933 observations of the Coma Cluster, in which he noticed that the visible mass was nowhere near enough to hold the galaxies together, and quietly named the missing ingredient dark matter. Vera Rubin and Kent Ford, working in the 1970s on the rotation of Andromeda, would find the same anomaly written across every spiral galaxy they measured, and no one has yet been able to explain it away.

We consider what dark matter is not — brown dwarfs, wandering rogue planets, ordinary baryonic matter in unusual forms — and what it might be: WIMPs, axions, sterile neutrinos, particles we have theorised but not yet detected in XENON, LUX, LZ, or any of the exquisite underground experiments now running quietly in disused mines. We visit the Bullet Cluster, whose separated visible and gravitational mass gives the visual case that dark matter is real. And then we drift into the strangest chapter of all — the 1998 supernova measurements of Perlmutter, Riess, and Schmidt, which found that the expansion of the universe is not slowing under gravity as everyone expected, but accelerating, driven by something now called dark energy. The current best inventory of the cosmos runs to about five percent ordinary matter, twenty seven percent dark matter, and sixty eight percent dark energy. Ninety-five percent of everything is currently a placeholder.

Nothing in tonight's story is meant to be memorized. There will be names and dates, but no pressure to keep them straight. The pace is slow on purpose. You may drift off at any point.
